LinkedIn for Radiologic Technologists
You’ve probably heard the word “LinkedIn” brought up at work or at a conference or webinar, and perhaps even heard a few coworkers talk about it. You may have looked into it, set up a quick account, but never thought much about it since. So now is as good a time as any to jump in and learn more about it.
What is LinkedIn? LinkedIn is a social networking site specifically designed for professionals. There vision was to create an opportunity for everyone on a global basis by connecting world professionals. There are over 630 million members in over 200 countries currently on this platform. But even with this large a database, many still don’t know what it is, how to use the platform or how to benefit from it. It’s a pretty easy platform if you are familiar with Facebook or other similar social networks. You network with people by adding them as connections, similar to sending a “friend request” on Facebook.
Join LinkedIn groups: Groups are a great way to meet with like-minded individuals like yourself. Again, it doesn’t matter if they are not on the same career level as yourself, you can connect with professionals already working in radiography or a specialty area of imaging. Groups also allow you to take part in discussions, which is an excellent way to exhibit your knowledge on topics related to radiography. Other group members, who may include influential individuals in leading organizations, may be impressed with you and want to connect. You can look up groups that have common interests as you and join the group. Here you can follow posts, comment on subjects, or even create a post yourself that you feel may be of some interest to others in the group. You have a home page which has a news feed that shares with you posts from your connections or from groups that you have joined. Keep in mind that this is a professional network so the posts that you are likely to see are related to careers, business, motivational tips, or radiology updates.
Your Profile: Because this is a professional network, it is important that you have a good profile that represents YOU and what you do in the radiology field. It doesn’t matter if you are a student tech, a rad tech, or the director of the department your profile is important and can attract opportunities. Take this as you would any project by allocating an ample amount of time to gather useful information. When you are done, you should have an accurate, relevant, and compelling LinkedIn profile that begins with a good intro section, which includes your name, photo, occupation, contact info, and location. Below that, you can add other profile sections such as where you work, your education, your skills, and any honors or awards that would make you stand to someone seeking advice in a particular area. Your profile is basically a resume online. So why is this important? A professionally written and completed LinkedIn profile creates a positive first impression of you and proves your abilities to employers and recruiters as they get to see your accomplishments, recommendations, and work history. If you want to grow in your profession, gain experience and knowledge, want to network with those who are in positions that you want to be in – it is great to have these folks as part of your network that you can have mentor you.
Your Network: Because your network is a direct reflection of you and your profession, it is important to grow it with people and companies that will help your flourish and succeed. When another professional invites you to connect with them, you receive a notification for a pending invitation. You can then either accept or ignore the invitation. It is good to grow your network with people who can help you grow in your profession. Once you are connected with another professional, you can message them just like you would on any other social network. But keep in mind – this is intended for business and professional growth, not talking about your favorite restaurant or car that you saw driving to work. Now if you have found some shoes that are super comfortable and help you manage a 8 or 10 hour shift without back pain – that is something to share with others who may be in your position.
Jobs: Employers are actively posting job listings on LinkedIn every day. There are more than 20 million open jobs on this site at any given time. LinkedIn also recommends jobs for you based on your profile and career interests. So if you are considering looking for a job or training for a different modality it is important that your profile is strong and your network is solid. When people are looking at your profile, you will get a notification letting you know that you have appeared in searches. I have been told that 90% of recruiters and head hunters use LinkedIn regularly to fill open positions. Once you have a LinkedIn account, you can research companies, managers, and interviewers, before submitting your application. Doing a quick search of company pages will give you the latest news stories and show you information about the people that work for that organization.
